Lauki Chana Dal(sorakaya senagapappu)

I cook dal more often because of its nutritious values. All dal recipes are easy and tasty. This pappu/daal turns out tasty goes well with rice or roti.
Sorakaya Senagapappu

Ingredients:

1 medium lauki/sorakaya(Approx 3 cups of lauki , peeled and cut into 1 inch size chunks)
1 medium onion finely sliced
2 medium tomatoes finely chopped
Half cup dry chanadal(wash and soak chanadal  in water for 30min-1 hour, keep aside don’t throw the water)
1 tsp ginger garlic paste or 3-4 garlic pods
2-3 green chilies
Dry spices
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp red chilli powder
A handful of coriander leaves washed and chopped
1/4 tsp cumin and mustard each
Salt to taste
1 tbsp oil+1 tsp ghee

Method:

1.In a pressure cooker heat oil, add cumin and mustard seeds. Let them sizzle. Add green chilies and chopped onion. Sauté till onions turn light brown.
2.Add ginger garlic paste, fry till raw smell goes off. Now add chana dal fry for a minute add lauki pieces fry for 2 more minutes .Add all the dry spices.Fry for 30 seconds.
3.Add tomatoes cook for few minutes, add half cup water, close the lid, pressure cook till it is almost done, upto 2 whistles(takes 8-10 min) Open pressure cooker only when cool.
4.Add a cup of water and salt. Boil for some time. I usually mash the chana dal after cooking so that it thickens the curry and holds everything together as a thick sauce.
5.Add chopped cilantro.

Note:
You can substitute garlic with ginger garlic paste.I remember my mom never liked to add ginger in any dal recipes.
